Five-Foot Way
Exhibited at the American Watercolor Society 157th Annual International Exhibition, 2024.
The five-foot way is a unique feature of the Malaya’s shophouses. It was originally mandated by Sir Stamford Raffles as part of his 1822 town plan of Singapore.
The five foot way, a kind of verandah, was intended to provide for the accommodation of the pubic by furnishing them with a covered walkway where they might find some respite from the tropical heat or sudden downpour, and be in “no danger of sudden death from numerous palankeens that were careering along the middle of the way”; it served as safe passage away from the road traffic.
